Selecting the Ideal Summer Camp for your Child
- Each child is different and so is each camp. Consider your child's interests and abilities. Whether your child is interested in arts or science or sports, try to find a program which offers that activity. Some camps organize their programs with general exposure to all activities while others stress individual choices for most or all activities. Families should consider which option is best for their camper.
- Review information together. Once you have selected camps that meet your criteria, you can involve your child in the process by reviewing camp information together. Parents and campers should be comfortable about the camp choice and make an informed decision after talking to and meeting with the camp director.
- Areas of discussion with the Camp Director can include: camp size; the director's experience and objectives for the summer; the length of sessions; attitude towards discipline, phone calls, homesickness; provisions for children with special needs; religious content; geographic area of clientele; and the age and experience of the counselors.
Its never too early to start finding the right camp. Many overnight camps are filled by December.
